This is a record of all events held in 2014 by the Berlin branch (organisers: J. M. White and T. Tollefsen).
First Meeting!
For the first meeting, I suggest we get
together for some drinks. After a chat, we can perhaps suggest more
concrete plans for social gatherings in the future, like museum visits,
walking tours, etc. Our goal is to firstly reach out to academic
historians (from bachelors to doctorates) and secondly to connect with
those who have a broader interest in history. Whilst we are not limited
to either the history of Berlin or German history, it would make sense
to exploit the marvellous landmarks that one of Europe's great capitals
has to offer.
Date and Time: 12th August 2014, 19:00
Place: Bruegge, Kottbusser Straße 13, 10999, Berlin.
Attended: 12 people
First World War exhibition
In memory of the centenary of the
outbreak of the First World War, the Deutsches Historisches Museum has
an excellent exhibition on the conflict. We will go around the exhibit
together and then adjourn for a drink and something to eat in the city
centre. Tickets are 8 euro (full price) and 4 euro (discount).
For details of the exhibit, please see:
(If there is enough interest, we could also do the guided tour which
takes place at the same time for 4 euro in addition to the entrance
price).

Place: Deutsches Historisches Museum
Attended: 7 people

and its secret police apparatus. Although the main exhibit is closed at
the moment, there is a travelling exhibition from the Warsaw Uprising
Museum which examines the Polish uprising against Nazi occupation in
1944.
For further information, please see:

would like to do the tour, PLEASE SAY SO AS I NEED TO BOOK IT. I WILL
ONLY BOOK A TOUR IF MORE THAN 7 PEOPLE WISH TO DO IT.

Place: Topographie des Terrors
Attended: 12 people (tour was held).
'Us' and the 'others': the formation of a comparative gaze in European history (talk)
Dr. Stavros Moutsios, guest scientist at
the Humboldt University, has very kindly offered to give a lecture based
on his current research. For an abstract, please read on:
"How has Europe seen other civilizations throughout its history? The
lecture will examine the emergence and institutionalisation of the
European – and, in broader sense, western – comparative gaze in two
pivotal periods in the continent’s history: Greek Antiquity and European
Modernity. We will overview the social-historical context that makes
these two areas special in the way other cultures were seen and
approached. The lecture will conclude by reflecting also on how these
traditions are impacting today on the way we see and compare societies
under the conditions of globalization."
When you arrive at Aufsturz, please ask for directions to the
klubraum. Alternatively, I will sit at the front of the bar with a red
umbrella until 1655. Please arrive on time: we will have to start at
precisely 1700 as we will only have use of the room until 1930.
Date and Time: 9th November 2014, 17:00
Place: Aufsturz, Oranienburger Straße 67, 10117, Berlin
Attended: 29 people

to the apotheke but BEFORE you come to car park: you need to climb the
stairs to the first floor. I will have a red umbrella on the table.

'Hunger strike campaigns by prisoners from the Red Army Faction in the 1980s' (Talk)
Jan Schulz, a doctoral researcher from
the European University Institute, has very kindly agreed to present to
our group on the theme of the Red Army Faction and prison hunger strikes
in the 1980s. This is part of his ongoing research into German and
European left-wing 'terrorism' in the modern era.
Please either go to the back of the bar to the klubraum or meet me at
the table near the door (I will have a red umbrella on the table).
Suggested donation: 1 to 2 euro (to cover projector rental cost of 15 euro).
Date and Time: 23rd November 2014, 18:00
Place: Aufsturz, Oranienburger Straße 67, 10117, Berlin
Attended: 19 people
RAF - Terrorist Violence. Special Exhibition at the Deutsches Historisches Museum
From the DHM website:
"The terroristic violence of the RAF was the biggest domestic challenge in the history of the Federal Republic of Germany. The exhibition shows documents and objects from the late 1960s to the present, demonstrating how political ideals changed into violent acts. It also considers the state’s reaction and provides insights into the societal discourse."

Due to the lack of an english public tour at a sensible time, and the insane price they charge for a dedicated tour, we will skip that. Jan Schultz, the PhD researcher who held a talk for us last month on hunger strikes in support of the RAF will join us, however, and will be glad to discuss the exhibition with us.
The Deutsches Historisches Museum charges admission, so bring money, and if you are a student (or a pensioner), bring ID.
After the museum visit we will as usual have a friendly discussion with refreshments in a nearby café.
Date and Time: 21st December 2014, 14:45
Place. Deutsches Historisches Museum
Attended: 6 people
